David Kalergis, JD/MBA

Company Co-Founder, Chief Executive Officer, Member of the Company’s Board of Directors

David Kalergis graduated from the University of Virginia College of Arts and Sciences, Class of 1970, with a B.A. in Psychology. In 1982 he graduated from the Combined Program of the Colgate Darden Graduate School of Business Administration and the University of Virginia School of Law, receiving both J.D. and M.B.A. degrees.

Before attending graduate school, David worked as an intelligence analyst for the U.S. Government, specializing in weapons development strategies of the Soviet military. After graduate school, he was associated with the New York City law firm of Dewey, Ballantine, Bushby, Palmer & Wood, practicing in the areas of corporate finance, public offerings, and mergers and acquisitions involving pharmaceutical companies and biotechnology companies.

In 1991, David joined the board of directors of Pharmaceutical Research Associates, Inc., a Charlottesville-based corporation providing clinical trials services to international pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, where he also served as General Counsel and Director of Business Development until 1997. In this capacity he was involved in the planning, cost analysis, and implementation of all phases of pharmaceutical clinical trials across a wide range of indications.

In November 1997, David was asked by the University of Virginia to direct its “Gateway” initiative to link high-technology industry more closely with University of Virginia research faculty. He remains involved with the University’s efforts to encourage the spin-out of new high technology companies.

In 2001 he co-founded Diffusion Pharmaceuticals LLC, a clinical-stage drug development company commercializing novel proprietary pharmaceutical technologies. He currently serves as the company’s Chief Executive Officer. Diffusion receives funding support from the United States military, which views the company’s technology as a potential breakthrough for the treatment of wounded soldiers in far-forward battlefield areas. Human clinical trials of Diffusion’s lead compound trans sodium crocetinate (TSC) began in 2007 to explore its uses in indications ranging from peripheral arterial disease to radiation sensitization in the treatment of cancerous tumors.

David is on a number of boards, including publicly traded Virginia National Bank, where he also serves on the Audit Committee and as Chairman of the Assets and Liabilities Committee. Other current board service includes the Virginia Biotechnology Association.

David is a graduate of the Harvard Business School’s Leadership and Strategy in the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Industry program, is a member of the New York and Virginia State Bars, and the author of The Role of the University in the Commercialization of Biotechnology (1981). He is married to author and photographer Mary Motley Kalergis. They live in Albemarle County, Virginia.
